One of the females that’s being hailed as the torchbearer for the next generation of hip-hop is Nicki Minaj, who’s making a huge splash in the rap world. What’s your opinion on her as an artist and what she’s doing with the genre?

I like everything I’ve heard from her so far. What I do like about her is number one, I got mad love for Lil Wayne. He’s bringing her up, he’s giving her an opportunity to come up through his camp. She’s showing and proving. Eve did the same thing. She spit with every dude in the Ruff Ryders camp, and that showed that she had the courage, gumption, talent and ability to be in this game. But then the records that she made were great records that talked about things that females wanted to talk about, and they were hit records. Her first album was platinum, so to me, when we do get on, we make a big splash because there aren’t that many of us. We stand out from the crowd. I’m hoping that there’s not just Nicki Minaj, but that there’s someone else out there, the next whoever, that’s waiting to have that same opportunity that she’s getting right now. But God bless her, I hope she blows up, because that’s what we need right now. We need that female energy in the game.

Drake “Does Not Fuck With Motown At All”

Up-and-coming Toronto rapper Drake has spoken candidly about his upcoming debut, his association with Lil Wayne and newly signed record deal in the upcoming issue of Fader magazine.

During the interview Drizzy confirms that he received over a million dollars for his highly publicized deal. As XXLMag.com previously reported in June he signed directly to his manager Cortez Bryant’s company Aspire and inked a unique distribution deal with Universal Republic after months of being courted by every major label. “I went through Universal Republic because I don’t fuck with Motown,” he explained to the magazine. “At All.”

Drake has spoken out about his personal beef with Sylvia Rhone the president of Motown Records and the executive vice president of Universal Records – the parent label to mentor Lil Wayne’s Young Money imprint – on record before. On “Say What’s Real,” a track from his critically-acclaimed mixtape So Far Gone he spit: “I’ve always been something that these labels can’t buy/especially if they trying to take a piece of my soul/and Sylvia be telling Tez/Damn, Drake fly/and he just be like, ’silly motherfucka I know‘”

Now some light has been shed on their relationship. According to the article, during Drake’s bidding war, Rhone threatened the rapper with legal action if he went elsewhere.

At the end Drizzy says the Young Money logo will appear on his CD but he explains he is doing so out of respect not because of contractual obligations. ”I respect the fact that Wayne put me in this position,” he said. “But as an artist I have to do my own thing at this point. I’m not sure if that’s gonna be a struggle in the next couple of month, to set myself apart. I don’t want it to feel like a disrespectful thing, but I know it’s a bridge that I’m going to cross as far as becoming my own person.”

As far as the album is concerned, Drake’s camp says that Kanye West, who has already directed the clip for “Best I Ever Had,” is toying with the idea of executive producing the project. Drake has already went into the studio with Rihanna, Pharrell and Ye for the album, entitled Thank Me Later.

The 2009 Video Music Awards nominations are out, and though much of the attention is on Best Video, one of the most intriguing categories is the race for Best New Artist. It pits Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” against 3OH!3 (“Don’t Trust Me”) and three top-shelf MCs: Drake (“Best I Ever Had“), Kid Cudi (“Day ‘N’ Nite”) and Asher Roth (“I Love College”).

Drake has certainly built up a great deal of buzz in the hip-hop community. And unlike some artists, he has fully delivered on that hype. A smooth, crooning MC in the Lil Wayne mold, his runaway hit “Best I Ever Had” has not only found a home on regular rotation on MTV but also has camped out near the top of the Billboard chart for most of the summer. Though the Canadian rapper has recently hit on hard times (he re-injured his knee at a concert stop in New Jersey), he’s still had an incredible year: He dropped a much-downloaded mixtape, signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money label, was drafted to the “American’s Most Wanted tour” and got Kanye West to direct the clip for “Best I Ever Had.”

Last night at the America’s Most Wanted concert in Virgina Beach, I saw Lil Wayne & Shanell performed this Live with the band and they said it was off of her upcoming project. Im glad that Shanell is getting put out more because she is very talented and is a great song writer. We hope for more from her in the future. Lil Wayne On Show With Chris Brown: ‘U Kno I Had To Show Him Sum Luv’

Lil Wayne fans got a big surprise when the America’s Most Wanted tour rolled into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Virginia Beach, Virginia, two nights after Drake was forced to leave the tour after seriously re-injuring his knee.

That surprise was a guest appearance from Chris Brown.

In his first onstage appearance since pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna in February, singer Chris Brown jumped onstage near the end of headliner Lil Wayne’s set. Brown, who is from Virginia, helped out by lending his voice to Drake’s “Every Girl,”[click here for the video] and paid tribute to Michael Jackson by moonwalking as “Billie Jean” played [click here for the video] in the background at the end of the night’s show. Wayne asked the crowd to make noise for “the new Michael.”

When asked by MTV News for a comment about the performance, Weezy responded simply via e-mail through a rep: “U kno I had to show him sum luv.”

The surprise appearance at the Young Money gig was Brown’s first public appearance since releasing a video on July 20 in which he apologized to Rihanna for the assault on the eve of the Grammys, which left her with facial contusions and cuts. Brown pleaded guilty last month to one count of felony assault and was ordered to perform 180 days of community service in Virginia as part of his plea deal.

Right now we’re not sure if Brown will be performing on other dates on the tour,which is scheduled to last through August 23. Brown appeared to be trying to fill a gap created when Drake went down on Friday night at a show in Camden, New Jersey, where he re-injured his already torn up knee, [click here for video] requiring immediate surgery. Drake blogged about being laid up over the weekend.
